iWaste was engaged by long-standing client Cinque Energy Solution to decommission a 40-rack server room and data centre in the Fishponds area of Bristol. The old business unit had recently been sold to a property developer to be converted into flats and needed to be stripped of all electronic waste and recycled in line with current legislation and compliance.

The building was occupied with residents which meant the team had to work to limited and tight time frames. All the equipment to be dismantled was located on the First Floor and only accessible via stairs. The electrical waste included large transformers and commercial switches individually weighed in excess of one-tonne, which made dismantling and removal to the car park at the rear of the building a challenging process. The size of the project and the nature of the equipment to be recycled required additional staff training.

Utilising iWaste’s unique expertise with large-scale decommissioning of this type of electronic waste, a detailed project management plan was put in place. Site visits and a thorough risk assessment were undertaken, providing the client with an expectation of delivery, potential risks, and challenges. Staff training prior to the assignment ensured the team were fully briefed on the correct handling of the equipment to aid a seamless process ready for recycling. iWaste maintained best practices with a fully managed team of 10 staff and three LWB Sprinters vehicles at full capacity, a total of 20+ van loads, which transported the scrap metal to a local recycling partner.

iWaste completed the project within the proposed five working days. Working alongside the client’s engineer, the team adhered to health and safety procedures and operating standards in line with client requirements. 30 tonnes of electronic waste was correctly and safely dismantled, and removed from the building where 95% was recycled locally.
