Case Study
Chip ‘n’ Pin, Pay and You Throw
Project
Collection and recycling of chip and pin machines
Sector
Retail
Date
June 2018
Background
In 2014, iWaste was retained by BP to collect and securely destroy 2,500 chip and pin readers from hundreds of its petrol stations across the UK.
Challenge
Collections from multiple sites across the country required streamline planning to complete the job within the contracted time-frame and maximise internal resources.
Solution
The WEEE (waste electronic & electrical equipment) was mainly VeriFone chip and pin units. These were broken down into their components parts, with plastics separated off to be sent to a specialist recycler and remaining waste shredded to extract small amounts of ferrous metals, and parts including circuit boards and wires.
Result
iWaste provided a complete end-to- end secure disposal route for the chip and pin units. This greatly reduced previous recycling route costs by a third. Full certification including certified destruction documents, duty of care and asset listing were provided.
