Background
With the current £1 coin being replaced for the first time in over thirty years because of its vulnerability to sophisticated counterfeiters, it’s left a number of electronic machines either needing upgrading or replacing. JLP’s supermarket division Waitrose with its 366 branches nationally, have a number of outdated coin sorting machines.
Challenge
JLP approached iWaste after hearing about similar works that iWaste had previously been a part of. Waitrose has 116 branches with older coin sorting equipment, scales and note counters which needed to be removed and recycled. Additionally, there was a requirement for additional equipment from another 250 branches to go back to one of their hubs via their own internal transport.
Solution
The iWaste team carefully planned collections from branches designated into 11 zones. Each zone had a store number and a fully planned collection route in order to make as many collections as possible inside of a day. The collection numbers were across 5 iWaste vans and ranged between 4 and 12 pickups on each day. The equipment, which in some cases were large, bulky and on occasion stored in cash offices required careful planning and use of live risk assessments on each site.
Result
iWaste completed the collections within 8 working days, recovering £74.35 hidden inside of the machines. A total of around 7 tonnes of note and coin sorting equipment was recovered and recycled at our Hampshire warehouse and included materials such as Steel, Brass, Aluminium, Cable, and High-Density Polyethylene.
